CHAPTER FOUR
~ Friend or Foe? ~
***
...A secret revealed...
Silence filled the library as the veil drifted gently back into place, once more covering the hairy, puce (that means brownish-purple... NOT green!)
colored bumps.
...Heart break...
Nervously the professor clear his throat and tears filled his eyes as his heart broke in two at the thought that she might never be loved for the beautiful person she truely was.
...The question...
Reaching up to touch the veil, the Princess asked, "Professor, what's wrong? Why do you look at me in that strange way?"
...Inspiration...
One lone tear slid down his cheek as he searched for the words to answer her. Suddenly he had an idea!
...Reflections of truth...
"Come with me, Child," he said, and took her to the little pond where they often went to study dragonflies, frogs, pond scum and pond gasses. Together they peered into the water and quietly he asked her to remove the veil.
"What do you see?" he asked.
"Pashzmeenie, Princess of Fromage," came the child like reply.
"Now... look at me," he said. "What do you see?"
"You, Professor," she said. "My friend."
"Now look at yourself as I have taught you to look... with the eyes of a scientist. Examine and compare. How are we different?" he asked.
...Understanding...
The silence grew as Pashzmeenie's eyes looked back and forth between the two reflections. Uncertainly she asked, "Do all boys have smooth skin, and all girls have bumps like mine?"
"Nooooooo..."
"So, some boys have bumps?" she asked hopefully.
"Nooooooo..."
"So, only some girls have bumps?" she asked in quiet desperation.
"Nooooooo..."
"So..." came the agonized whisper, "Only Pashzmeenie has the bumps?"
"Yes," came the soft reply.
~ Suddenly the royal calm snapped! ~
"Why did this happen to me? Does EVERYBODY know? Did YOU know? Is this a BAD thing? IT LOOKS PRETTY BAD! How did I get them? How many are there... AND HOW DO I GET RID OF THEM?!!"
She grabbed him by the collar, rattling his old bones and shaking him as hard as she could!
"You have to help me, Professor! NOBODY WILL MARRY ME! Grampa says that it's my job to grow up, marry, and produce an heir... AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS! ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME? THE KINGDOM IS IN JEOPARDY! WHAT CAN WE DO?!"
By this time he'd fallen to the ground and she was shouting down at him, looking eyeball to eyeball.
...A royal command...
"WELL?" she demanded. "GET UP AND FIND A CURE!"
It was the first command of her young life, but as she grabbed her veil and turned to stalk away, a terrible thought came to her.
Turning slowly, she asked, "Professor... even thought I have the bumps... will you still be my friend?"
"My dear child, it has been the great joy of my life to be your teacher and it is my honor to be your friend. Nothing will change that! But come... let's go back to The Great Library! Knowledge awaits!"
~ And so began the great quest of his life...
to find a cure for his friend ~
