CHAPTER SEVEN
~ The Winds of Change ~

***

...In the castle...

Pashzmeenie sat on the plump, velvet cushions and stared angrily out of the window. Her room... a beautiful round chamber, with mullioned windows that encircled a 360 degree view of the city, was filled with multi-colored velvets, thick carpets and a center fireplace. It had always filled her with happiness. But now... high above the city in a tower of pink stone that glistened in the sunlight, the entire room was filled with the anxiety of her feelings.

...How could this happen?...

She was beside herself over the treatment of the people... her people! And the Professor wouldn't tell her anymore about it. Fearing he had already said too much, he refused to name the man who had made the law.

...Who could it be?...

The worst thing about it was that Pashzmeenie had already been taught that only the reigning monarch could make a law. So she knew that it was someone in her own family. But... who? There were three possibilities and it broke Pashzmeenie's heart to know that one of them had treated others so cruely.

...A breaking heart...

A tear escaped to fall upon Pashzmeenie's cheek. She couldn't bear to think that anyone in her family had deliberately tried to hurt another. She loved tham and felt that her little heart would break for the worry of it all.

But her mother always said, "When you don't know what to do... it's best to pray and give that worry away!"

...A child's prayer...

So Pashzmeenie knelt down on a little green velvet pillow and poured out all of the worries and hurts in her child's heart. And slowly she began to feel better. After all, GOF could do ANYTHING! And that meant that He could fix EVERYTHING! He would give her the help that she needed!

...Just the facts...

Pashzmeenie thought things through and knew what to do. She would proceed in a scientific manner, just as the Professor had taught her. First... review the facts that she was aware of...

Second, she would visit each man and find out as much as she could about him... it would never do to talk about them to others... and then she would fit the pieces of the story together like a big puzzle. Maybe... just maybe, she would get to the bottom of it all!

And if she could find out the WHO, and learn the WHY... then maybe she could find a way to restore the kingdom! It is true that she was only a little girl now... but one day she would be Queen. Deep in her child's heart she knew that she must try to right this terrible wrong.

The most important thing of all was that whoever had done this terrible thing should have the chance to make it right!

She knew it wasn't her father because of that last conversation with the Professer. But there were three former monarchs still living:

Her great-uncle, Maximilian V
Her great-grandfather, Leopold II
Her grandfather, Gustauv I

Pashzmeenie considered what she knew about each one...

~ King Maximilian V ~

Her great-uncle Max, the 82 year old patriarch of the family, was treated with great reverence. Voices became hushed in the former king's presence and people bowed low when he passed. He was a giant of a man whose own rooms were dominated by the beautiful caged birds that he had collected from all over the world.

~ King Leopold II ~

Her great-grandfather Leo was Uncle Max's younger brother. At 75 he was still considered one of the most handsome and charming men in the kingdom. His wife, the former Queen Eugenie, had passed into glory 15 years before, leaving him to face his later years alone. But... interestingly enough... eligible ladies from all over the kingdom had begun to seek out the former king and he was now the kingdom's most sought after escort!

~ King Gustauv I ~

Her grandfather Gus, along with his wife, the former Queen Hermina, though greatly loved... was considered to be somewhat 'eccentric'. The former king preferred the company of children, giving endless parties and events to entertain and expand the knowledge of these little subjects who would one day be the adults whose characters would direct the course of the kingdom's future growth.

It was time for Pashzmeenie to learn more...

~ So she made a secret plan ~
