CHAPTER NINE
~ King Leopold II ~

***

...The hunt continues...

It was time for Step Two of Pashzmeenie's Plan.

The former King Leopold II, who Pashzmeenie knew as Grampa Leo, had one great passion in his life. And The Royal Kennels were filled with the fruits of that passion. So it was that Pashzmeenie came to this place to look for him.

...The Royal Kennels...

The air exploded with wild, frenzied barking as Pashzmeenie rounded the corner to enter the kennel courtyards. A dozen crazed puppies bounded and barked as only a Dachshund can do.

Grampa Leo was delighted to see Pashzmeenie, who secretly thought that he was the most handsome man in all the world. He called a young kennel worker to spread a thick blanket on the ground beneath the sheltering arms of a giant oak tree. As they sat, Grampa Leo opened the enormous wicker basket that Pashzmeenie had carried all the way from her room, high in a castle tower.

Oh, the surprises inside!

There was an enormous bag of meaty bones for Grampa Leo's dogs, a dozen small round rubber balls, a new dog brush, 12 bright red ribbons, and a new red velvet cushion for The Lady Ginger... who was the newest mother in the kennel.

And as a special treat, Merri came along to deliver a basket from the kitchen. A hearty laugh escaped from Grampa Leo when he opened it and saw the tin of dog-shaped cookies and the jug of cold milk nestled beside it. Milk and cookies were his favorite snack in all the world! He was delighted to share them with his great-granddaughter. As they visited, Grampa Leo began to tell her about his dogs.

~ And this is what she learned ~

Long ago, after the death of Grampa Leo's wife, the former Queen Eugenie, a visitor from the Teutonic Lands came bearing a gift for the saddened king. It was a tiny red dog with short legs, an exceptionally long body, long velvety ears that dusted the floor, and large soulful brown eyes that touched the heart of the King.

Her name was Pandora and she was filled with surprises! The biggest one of all came some weeks later, when she presented Grampa Leo with a litter of tiny wiggling puppies! His life became filled with the excitement and wonder of their lives, and gradually the great loneliness in his life began to fade.

Eventually The Royal Kennels became known the world over for their breeding quality. But there was something special about Grampa Leo... he refused to sell any of his dogs! He chose to give them away to other hurting people, whose lives were empty and lonely. And as he gave each one away, he shared with its new owner that this precious puppy would fill their life with devotion and unconditional love...
a living reminder of the love that GOD has for each one of us.

Grampa Leo's heart was filled with love for others and Pashzmeenie didn't discover anything to link him to the terrible law. And since she couldn't find out any more from Uncle Max, that left Grampa Gus... but if he didn't know...

~ Pashzmeenie didn't want to think about that ~
