CHAPTER ONE
~ A Summons From THE KING! ~
***
...On the mountain of THE KING...
A proclamation was declared
~ COME TO THE COURTYARD OF THE KING! ~
And come they did... big ones and small ones, furry and smooth ~ gray squirrels that scampered through new fallen leaves, gentle white bunnies that played hop through the wood, shy little turtles dressed in armor of green... whose dragging tails left a zigzag trail, sad mourning doves that waddled and cooed, bold winged eagles with piercing gold eyes, fashionable red ladybugs with black polka dots, softly buzzing bees dressed in black and gold stripes, lonely fireflies with bright blinking lights, well-perfumed skunks with fur black and white... onward they came to the court of THE KING.
...In the presence of THE KING...
With awe they approached before the throne where THE KING's GLORY outshone the sun. All bowed low, humbled by His greatness and majesty. A hush fell over the assembly as they waited for the words of THE KING. And this is what they heard...
...THE KING speaks...
"Creatures, hear my voice. The time has come for the earth to see my TRUTH. You must carry my message to the world of men. Who among you will answer my call?"
Slowly His eyes scanned the crowd, searching for those who could help. Now and then His great and knowing eyes would rest on an unlikely creature, and His gaze would soften as He quietly called their name.
Trembling they came to stand before the throne, and a murmuring began throughout the crowd. The eagle they could understand, but... a lady bug...
a turtle
... a mourning dove
... and a SKUNK!?!! How could THE KING use creatures like this? Surely amongst all of the creatures there were better than these to help THE KING!
...The boasting...
"I can do it!" declared the elephant with an arrogant blast of his trump. "I am strong! How many here are stronger than I? I will not tire in the work of THE KING!"
"And I," said the kangaroo, "can safely carry the message in my pouch! How many of you can do that?!"
"There is no creature swifter than I!" growled the cheetah, looking at the falcon out of the corner of his eye and daring him to speak. "Surely I can take the message quickest of all!"
"I can carry ten times my weight! Who better to carry the message... whatever its size?" demanded the ant.
But one by one the murmurers were silenced by the eyes of THE KING.
Softly He said, "Beware that pride and jealousy do not steal your place in my kingdom. Take care that the first among you should not become the last."
