CHAPTER TWO
~ Stolen Treasures! ~
***
...On the mountain of THE KING...
Nightfall came quickly to the mountain of THE KING. The other creatures were sent back to their homes, and now... in a luminous circle of moonlight... THE KING addressed his chosen few.
"There is much to be done. Come... let us begin. I have chosen each of you for a specific reason. You, Lady Bug, are the smallest. But without you there will be no message at all, for it is your black spots that will provide the ink for my message."
"And you, Turtle, so calm and still... Lady Bug needs you to stand upon so that she can be raised up."
"Friend Skunk has the hands of an artist. He will create my message by dipping the tip of his tail into the ink pots on Lady Bug's back."
"As soon as the message is complete, friend Dove will carry its truths to the four corners of the earth, for she is the living symbol of the peace of my Presence."
THE GREAT KING spoke far into the night, telling the creatures of all they must do. And when morning was come, they were ready to begin.
...Gathering materials...
They scoured the woodland, searching for the right material to write the message on. Stone was too heavy... leaves were too light... flower petals were too delicate... moss would not do... berries would be too tempting to eat... fallen trees wouldn't work... but, perhaps bark - if they could just find the right kind of bark! And there before them, almost shining in the noonday sun, stood the white trunk of a Paper Birch tree, with its treasures already peeling free.
Slowly friend Turtle flipped his shell, and the little band of creatures began to fill it with the precious paper bark. Lady Bug was too small for this, but from her vantage point on Skunk's head, she helped him to select the best pieces for their task. Much bark was required, so they hunted through the woodland for more trees and Turtle made endless trips to empty his shell.
When they had gathered enough materials, the creatures rested. One by one the servants of The King came to bring them food and drink... ripe juicy berries and sweet honey nectar. Refreshed, they were eager to begin again.
...Creating the message...
Turtle flipped his shell again and Lady Bug sat on his back. Carefully Skunk removed the caps from her ink spots and gently stirred the pots with a pine needle. Then he groomed the tip of his fluffy tail to a fine point. Friend Dove chose a piece of paper bark and stuck it onto the tiny broken branch at the base of the tree where Skunk would write the message. To the right of the tree sat Turtle and Lady Bug... at just the right distance for dipping. Skunk pulled up a rock, made himself comfortable, prayed for skill and patience, and began to write.
Each letter was carefully and beautifully made. Skunk did not rush. Those who work for THE KING give their very best and that can take time. Day by day the work progressed untill finally THE KING's message was ready.
...A job well done...
Slowly the creatures cleaned up. Skunk put the tops back onto Lady Bug's ink pots, and then cleaned his tail in a strange solution of snail slime and grasshopper goo - the only substance that can clean away the residue of lady bug ink! First he coated the tip of his tail and then he let it dry. When it had hardened, he banged his tail on the rock and the stuff broke like glass... removing the ink that it had soaked up and shattering it into a thousand pieces!
Turtle stretched his stiff legs for he had not moved at all, and Lady Bug flew crazily all around to mix up the ink in her pots. Dove took the unused pieces of bark and scattered them throughout the woodland. Then she lined up the message so they could see the finished work.
...Chaos in the wood...
But they were not the only ones who saw THE KING's message... for the wind had entered the wood! In a sudden jealous gusting, it stole the message... sweeping through the wood and hiding the pieces throughout the four corners of the world!
