CHAPTER THREE
~ Hide And Seek! ~

...At the scene of the crime...
In a last gleeful swirling, the wind set the fallen leaves rattling back to the woodland floor... and then it was gone.
Stunned, all was still... for a moment. But then panic filled the wood! Creatures ran here and there, crashing into one another in their desperate haste to gain control of the situation.
"Sound the alarm! Sound the alarm!" yelled Skunk, and the white stripe down his back turned red with his anger at the theft of THE KING's message.
"Oh, NO! No, no, no, and NO! We can't do that," said Turtle in his slow and deliberate way. "Then THE KING would know that His message has been stolen. NO... He has put us in charge, so we must find the message and put it back together."
"Dear Me! But how can we do that? THE KING will be so angry! Oh, what a terrible, terrible day... dear me!" cried the mournful cooing of the Dove.
"Now see here... get ahold of yourselves!" demanded the Lady Bug. "This is not a time to go to pieces! But one thing is clear... we can't do this alone. Pull yourselves together and come up with a plan while I round up some help!"
...And off she flew...
Hers was a dangerous mission, filled with pinching beaks, snapping jaws and lashing tongues! But she was persistent, and good fortune held. Suffering only a bent antenna, she returned triumphant some days later trailing behind a very motley crew indeed!
...Duty calls...
It was a
top secret meeting in the blazing light of day, deep within a hidden forest glade. And so were gathered a company of creatures most unlikely and incompatible.
There were squadrons of Eagles and The Bullfrog Brigade. The Great Ant Army assembled near The Firefly Flyboys, and The Cricket Commandos stood by The Pack Rat Patrol. The Hummingbird Airborne with its Hummer Elite hovered over The Beetle Battalions and The Fighting Ferret Legions.
The Water Wing Division of The Pelican's Pride carried representatives of The Special Fish Forces inside their big throaty pouches... taking care not to swallow. In all of the excitement, however, there were some casualties. But quick regurgitation saved the day... though the fish involved in these incidents were understandably put out!
Needless to say, all natural hostilities between the assembled forces were suspended for the duration of the operation. And whatever might be learned of one's natural enemy during this
top secret
mission could never be used against them in battle.
...A daring rescue...
Odd though it seemed, it was Turtle who took command in his armor of green, for in his slow and deliberate way he had made a daring plan.
The Eagle Squadrons would patrol the skies overland, while The Hummer Elite flew close to the ground. The Great Ant Armies, Cricket Commandos, Beetle Battalions and fast Fighting Ferret Legions would search the earth. The Bullfrog Brigade and The Firefly Flyboys formed the Audio-Visual Unit that would relay operation messages.
Naval Operations were directed by The Water Wing Division of The Pelican's Pride, and supported by the undersea operatives of The Special Fish Forces. Though not physically present, The Great Whale Divers would signal alert with their gushing water spouts and eerie whale song.
Each time a piece of the message was located, a member of The Eagle Squadron would be sent to deliver it back to the wood on the mountain of THE KING. And through this small handful of creatures, THE KING's message would be delivered.
~ But laughter echoed in the halls of the wind! ~
