CHAPTER FOUR
~ Operation Paperboy! ~

***

...In the hidden forest glade...

Mighty Eagle Squadrons gripped the ground with razor-sharp talons, bent low in a fearsome gathering of powerful leg muscles, then released and shot up into the air like rocket fire... screaming cries of war!

Below them The Hummer Elite revved up its engines and zoomed off through the forest as The Pelican's Pride awkwardly gathered itself and rose to sail slowly towards the sea. The Firefly Flyboys flew off into the wood, flashing lighted messages of encouragement to the assembled troops.

...Hysteria run amuck...

Suddenly sounds of hysterical chattering and tiny running feet were heard crashing through the underbrush! A strange little creature covered in something white burst into the clearing sobbing, "GET IT OFF... somebody please get it off!"

On ran the creature... tiny feet kicking through The Great Ant Armies, Cricket Commandos and Beatle Battalions. Bodies were flying all through the forest, agitating the troops! The carnage continued until suddenly there was a great THUD, and all sound stopped.

Dove... not knowing what to do, hovered at the forest edge crying, "Oh, dear! Oh, dear me!"

But Lady Bug flew right over the scene of the accident, shouting back a report... "Collision... toadstool and... well, um... some creature... covered in... well, it looks like... HEY FELLAS! COME QUICK!"

...Turtle and Skunk hurried over...

"Look at this... LOOK AT THIS!" shouted Skunk. "It's one of the letters!"

"Why, so it is!" said the Turtle. "Say... maybe it won't be so hard to find the message after all if the letters are just going to show up!"

"Let's get it to a safe place," said the Lady Bug.

...A sticky situation...

But when Skunk and Turtle tried to pick the letter up, it was stuck fast to the little creature underneath.

"OW... ow... OW! What are you trying to do - pull my face off? It's stuck... I think it's pine sap. Oh, please help me! I've been running around for days trying to find some way to get it off. OH, PLEASE!" The sobbing began again.

"Hmmm..." pondered the Skunk, who was an acknowledged expert in all things with stinky or sticky. " I believe what we need here is the spittle of the Spittle Bug. That should remove the resin bond without destroying the bark's surface or the letter printed with Lady Bug ink."

"SPITTLE BUG... Spittle Bug... Spittle Bug... Spittle bug... Spittle bug... Spittle bug... Spittle bug..." echoed the command down the line.

...Spitting mad...

One was finally located three meadows over, where he was snatched out of a sound sleep from the underside of a piece of sweet clover hay. By the time he arrived at the scene of the accident he was spitting mad... which was just what the Skunk wanted.

Skunk ordered a Spider to bind the bug to a small twig, and then, holding the stick, he gently rubbed the bug - with its 'spittle' oozing at full force - between the bark and the creature's fur. As the spittle bubbled, the resin bond released... freeing the little creature and the cherished letter.

"Say... " said the Turtle. "What are you anyway?"

"What am I... WHAT AM I... Why, I'm a chipmunk, that's what I am! Can't you see? Do you need glasses? What am I, INDEED!" said the chipmunk indignantly.

"Hey... what's going on here, anyway?" asked the bedraggled little fellow as he became aware of the creatures arrayed rank and file... as far as his eyes could see.

...Skunk takes charge...

"CONTAINMENT!" yelled the Skunk, and the Spider quickly roped the chipmunk in. "Now just relax, son. The Dove here is going to take you to a nice old hollow tree where you can rest up... recuperate from this terrible ordeal you've gone through. That's it... you just go along, son, and everything will be alright."

When Dove had carried the little chipmunk away, Skunk roared into action.

"Quick!" he yelled. "Get these troops out of here before we draw anymore attention to ourselves!" And once again the troops began to leave.

Turning back to his friends he said, "We need a safe place to keep the parts of the message as they're found... someplace where the wind can't find them."

"Well, we could keep them under my shell... at least until we find a better place." said the Turtle. "The wind can't get them there."

...So that is what they did...

~ But was any place safe
from the anger of the wind? ~
