CHAPTER FIVE
~ A Shocking Experience! ~
***
...Over the ocean blue...
The Pelican's Pride traveled far from the mountain of THE KING, establishing outposts amongst The Islands Of The Sea, where each pelican was given charge as lookout. Of course, the most important among them commanded the areas where it was most likely that parts of the message might be found.
...Three long days...
There had been plenty of time to discuss the arrangements, especially during the three days of fierce storming when the wind played with them like toys... tossing them between cloud and rain, blowing at them from all sides, and suspending them in the air! A worse three days they'd never known; for try as they might, no matter how hard they flapped their wings, they couldn't advance at all!
And the sore throats they had! Shouting was the only way to be heard over the laughter of the wind, and considering the size of their throats... well, it was an awful situation! Things weren't quite so bad for Chico The Pelican because nobody ever really talked to him... they just talked at him. You see, Chico was the littlest pelican of all... except for one thing. He had the BIGGEST FEET that any pelican had ever seen!
...He was not Fred Astair...
And because his feet were soooo big and his body was soooo small, Chico tripped a lot. Pelicans are not the most graceful of creatures to begin with, but with Chico's feet it was a nightmare! Everyone laughed at him, he was always falling down, and his nose was covered with bandages!
...The hard truth...
Chico knew that he was last on the list for an island, but when he saw the place that they'd picked for him he couldn't believe his eyes! It was just a big rock in the water! No plants... no trees to shade his siesta... no pretty flowers to smell with his big banged up nose! And worse yet, it was crawling with crabs... quarrelsome, pinching, crabby crabs! There were crabs everywhere... on the beaches... under the sand... on the rocks and in the crevices! Everywhere!
To make matters worse, the crabs discovered that his big feet were just right for pinching and they chased him all over the island! Poor Chico!!! There was nowhere to hide!
And then, just when his strength was giving out and he thought he could take no more, he tripped over his big feet and fell down... down... down... until THWACK! He smacked into something hard and passed out!
...Light in the darkness...
Chico came to, awakened by a dazzling light shining all around him! And standing over him was the strangest creature he had ever seen... a strange glowing creature that sizzled and sparked, wearing some sort of cape... something familiar... something... something that didn't belong to him!
"!Bueno!" he shouted, getting hurriedly to his sore and aching feet. "You have found one of the letters! Thank the heavens, I won't have to stay here anymore! Now, be a good fellow... if you'll just let me help you out of your... "OW!" SNAP... "OW!" SIZZLE... "OW!" Chico cleared his throat.
"Excuse me, Senor... perhaps, if you would remove the object from your interesting personage, then I... who have come so far to find it, could be on my way," he said. "Of course, it would be most helpful if you would direct me to the way out!"
...A matter of pride...
"Electro The Eel does not give things away! That would put Electro at a disadvantage!" the sparking creature cried as he drew himself up to tower over the little pelican. "However, Electro could be agreeable to making a little trade!" he offered persuasively, looking at Chico with interest.
"But, Senor! I have nothing to trade!" cried Chico, distressed to think of the treasure so near and yet so far away.
"Of course you do, my sad little friend! Just think of the lovely cape I could create with a few of those fine feathers!" exclaimed the eel. "Why, I would be the envy of all Eeldom with something so magnificent! And think of the dinner I could lure if my light show had such a thing to conceal it! Oh, come! You must trade with Electro!"
Thus the trade was made... albeit more painful for Chico than for the eel! You see, the journey back involved a great deal of circling the skies with a sore backside because it was the little pelican's directional tail feathers that Electro The Eel admired the most! Luckily for Chico, a great soaring Eagle happened along to give him a lift back, ending the mindless turning!
And so Chico's stature amongst The Pelican's Pride grew as another letter was returned to the mountain of THE KING!
