CHAPTER ELEVEN
~ Evil On The Wind! ~

...On the mountain of THE KING...
There was birdsong in the air and the forest was filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation as the newly promoted Pierre, a Sargeant in The Cricket Commandos, delivered the stack of letters that had been recovered from The French Forest!
Letters were being discovered all over the world and the stories of discovery were amazing... from electrified eels and crabs pinching hard, to pack rats with pins and mountains of trash! There were fighting mad crickets and arthritic old cats, and plastered up chipmunks and spittle bugs, too!
...Progress revealed...
"I believe it's time to see what we have!" cried the overjoyed Skunk. "Friend Turtle, empty your shell of the treasure it holds!"
So Turtle emptied his shell and the letters inside were added to those from The French Forest. Skunk sat guard atop the pile to prevent the wind from stealing them again.
"Oh, my!" exclaimed the Dove, as she saw how tall the stack of letters was. "Let's bring the other letters from the secret hiding place!"
"Then we can put them together and see how many are still missing!" declared the Lady Bug.
"Yes... but let's make sure that no one sees us do it. We have to keep the hiding place safe!" whispered the Turtle.
Everyone agreed. So they casually strolled about, stopping now and then to smell the fall mums and examine an acorn or chubby white mushroom. They hummed an aimless little tune as they went. Their eyes flicked to and fro as they searched for any signs that they were being observed.
...Out of sight...
Suddenly they were gone! Vanished into thin air! That hiding place sure is a good one, thought Skunk, as the trio disappeared before his very eyes.
But just as quickly they were back, running through the forest... zigzagging around bushes and under the low hanging branches of trees. Gasping for breath they arrived to gently stack the letters into small piles around the large one being guarded by their friend.
Skunk jumped down, and while the others kept watch, he rapidly assembled the letters of the message.
...Almost there...
Only three spaces to fill! They were almost there. And by the end of the week the last letter had arrived! They'd done it! And now they could finish the job!
...One more time...
But there was evil on the wind! It came... screaming its rage through the forest... rushing amongst the trees to snatch up the letters once again!
~ And its anger was a tangible thing ~
