DAY THREE
~ Vicious Little Monsters! ~

...Can you imagine?...
Oh my, what would live in a place like this... all darkness and putrid odors? WHAT COULD THEY BE?
If I could have caught a bit of wind, I would have flown out of there and avoided finding out! But I seemed to be stuck... some great sticky bit seemed to have attached itself to my person! Oh, the indignity of it...
And to make matters worse, the things at the bottom of the can had begun moving about! I thought that if I could just figure out what they were, perhaps I could strike up a conversation and they would tell me how to get out of the can...
GREAT WONKING WILLIES! The vicious little monsters were nibbling at my toes! And was that... singing?!!
"We are Maggots from the can!
And we live in every land!
We eat things so gross and bad...
It's a wonder we're not sad!
In it goes and out it comes!
We eat things like dirt and scum!
While we wiggle all the day...
We do it all the Maggot way!"
Horrible Horrors! The entire song was sung to the tune of 'The Green Beret' song, (Oh, you know the one!) and punctuated with hiccups and maniacal laughter... they were utterly mad! I had to get away, but there seemed to be no avenue of escape! So I began a desperate prayer of deliverance:
'Dear GOD,
I know you're very busy with... well, everything!
But it's me... Sylvie, and I need some help!
You've got to get me out of here... OH, NO!
They're starting to eat my leg!!
I can't magnify your GLORY
if they've eaten me all away!
Oh, do help me... I need you!
(soto voce) And GOD, they're really bad singers!
In JESUS name I pray,
Amen.'
And do you know what happened? There was a sound of footsteps in the snow and a big man creature picked up the can, turned it upside down with a great 'WHACK' on the ground, and all the maggots fell in a great wriggling pile and wriggled away in formation two by two... laughing maniacally about new victims to find!
But whatever had attached itself to me held fast to the side of the can! So when the man creature peered inside and saw us there - me and the sticky bit - he 'WHACKED' the can on the ground again... only harder this time, and out we fell! It was a fall to further misadventure...
